Curse of the Crimson Throne

Edge of Anarchy Part I: Haunted Fortunes

Zellara’s House

Tara the Bounty Hunter, J’aka the Fortune Teller, Caladrel the arcane librarian, and Lartus the Guardsman each found a Harrow card amongst their belongings requesting their presence at a certain home at sunset. The first to arrive was Tara, who cased the establishment from across the street for a few hours. She noted that there was no activity from or around the house. Shortly before sunset, Lartus, Caladrel and J’aka arrived almost simultaneously. J’aka knew that the house was the home of a fortune teller named Zellara. Tara joined them and they entered as J’aka said it would be rude not to.

They found a note on the table asking them to wait for their hostess and a basket of food beneath. While they waited, Tara and J’aka searched the house and found nothing of note. Tara noted that she had not seen anyone enter or exit the establishment all afternoon, and as she went to leave, Zellara returned.

Zellara told the tale of how Gaedren Lamm had stolen her Harrow deck, and how when he son went to retrieve it, Lamm had him killed. She sought the help of the Korvosan Guard, but Lamm’s connections were too powerful and her pleas were unanswered. She said that she had heard that her guests had all been wronged by Lamm and sought their help in exacting revenge. Zellara told them that Lamm was operating out of a old fishery a few blocks away.

The Old Fishery

The assembled group wasted no time in seeking out Lamm’s hideout. They found the decrepit building barely standing above the surface of the river and reconnoitered. The front door was locked. Down one side was a rickety old dock. Around the other was another dock with a stairway going down to water level and a loading dock. They made for the lower door, while J’aka kept watch above, but Caladrel slipped and fell into the water, where he was attacked by a Jigsaw shark. The shark was quickly dispatched by Lartus’ quarterstaff.

The noise from this commotion did not arouse those inside the building, but the loud crash as they attempted to open the door put the occupants on alert. Upon opening the door, they found a half-orc with a flail lording over a handful of children. He ordered the children to attack the new arrivals.

In the mean time, a gnome appeared from a door at the top of some interior steps. Immediately, Lartus mounted the stairs and killed him. Tara convinced the children, who were known to have been kidnapped by Lamm and forced to work in the fishery, to attack the half-orc, which they did, eventually pushing him through and opening in the floor into the river below.

A human eventually appeared from another door at the top of a ramp on the other side of the room. He shot a wand of splash at the invaders, but did little damage before Lartus charged and killed him. In a matter of moments, the battle was done, and the children had disappeared. Looking below Tara noted pilings leading to a low dock floating on the surface beneath the fishery.

Gaedren Lamm’s Lair

Lartus descended followed by Tara and then J’aka. Following the path, they came upon a chamber in the center of which was a pool over which several sets of manacles were suspended. Within the pool they spied a crocodile that snapped at Lartus and was quickly dispatched. During that encounter, the crimelord himself appeared with a crossbow, but was engaged by Tara before he could do anything, and knocked unconscious by Lartus. Searching the room he was protecting, they found several items of value, including a broach that Lartus believed had been stolen from Queen Ileosa and had a large reward. In a hat box, they also found Zellara’s severed head, which had clearly been in there several weeks, and her Harrow Deck. J’aka took possession of the deck.

The time for answers is at hand…

Revenge Achieved

Lartus, Tara, J’aka and Caladrel had Gaedren Lamm at their mercy, tied coffin-like in his lair. They interrogated him and learned that his henchmen, Giggles, who the children had pushed into through the hole in the floor of the fishery, killed Tara’s sister. He also named Willem of Red Gorge, a caravan merchant, as the source of the drugs that J’aka had become dependent on, and stated that Caladrel was framed for the murder because he was a convenient patsy.

While they were questioning Lamm, they heard what sounded like someone trying to swim stealthily outside. J’aka, Caladrel and Tara ran out to investigate and saw Giggles climbing into a sewer drain just beyond the walls of the fishery. J’aka limped after him. In the mean time, Lartus attempted to allow Lamm to die with dignity, but Lamm was defiant. In the end, he suffocated Lamm in the mud, and then left his body hanging in the manacles. Then three then pursued J’aka.

Into the Sewer

J’aka had not progressed too far as the sewer was dark and slippery, so the others caught up to him quickly. They slipped and slid as they progressed until they came upon a band of thugs. The combatants sought to engage, but three of the four thugs as well as Tara, Lartus, and Caladrel’s eidolon all slipped and fell. Caladrel dazed one of the thugs, and then the others recovered and made quick order of their foes. They passed a manhole above and noted the glow of flames coming from the surface.

Continuing further, they came upon a room with three other tunnels leading off. Tara and the eidolon entered the room and were attacked by three shocker lizards and made quick work of them. Tara spied another manhole that was open. They climbed out to find Korvosa in flames, angry mobs in the streets, and news that the king was dead and Queen Ileosa had ascended to the throne. As they watched, a sable riders crashed into a nearby statue and he and his mount were killed. They looted some weapons, armor, and his pristine sable rider cloak from the body.
